Privacy Policy
The short version: Aloud collects no data. Your recordings, transcripts, and journal entries never leave your phone. There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads, and no servers of ours for your data to reach. We could not read your journal even if we wanted to.
Who we are
Aloud is made by Accessible Resources Ltd ("we", "us"), a company registered in the United Kingdom. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Aloud iOS application — which is, almost entirely, nothing.
Data we collect
None. Aloud has no user accounts, no sign-in, no analytics or advertising SDKs, and makes no network calls to servers operated by us — none exist. In the App Store privacy label, Aloud is declared as "Data Not Collected."
What stays on your device
Everything Aloud works with is created, processed, and stored on your iPhone:
- Audio recordings and transcripts. Your speech is transcribed by Apple's on-device speech engine. Audio is saved to your device's storage and is never uploaded to us.
- Journal entries, titles, moods, threads, and streaks. Stored in the app's local database on your device.
- AI features. Titles, mood detection, and weekly reflections are generated on-device using Apple Intelligence (on supported iPhones) or simpler on-device analysis on other devices. Your entries are never sent to any external AI service.
Optional iCloud sync
If you have iCloud enabled, your entries may sync through your own private iCloud database (Apple CloudKit) so they appear on your other devices and survive a phone upgrade. This database belongs to your Apple Account, is encrypted by Apple, and is technically inaccessible to us — we cannot read, browse, export, or delete its contents. iCloud is governed by Apple's privacy policy, and you can disable iCloud for Aloud in iOS Settings at any time.
Face ID / Touch ID
If you turn on the app lock, unlocking is handled entirely by iOS. Aloud only receives a yes/no answer; biometric data never leaves Apple's secure hardware and is never available to us.
Microphone and speech recognition permissions
Aloud asks for microphone and speech-recognition access because it is a voice journal: you speak, and it writes. These permissions are used only while you are recording an entry, and you can revoke them at any time in iOS Settings (the core journaling flow requires them to work).
Health data (steps and sleep)
Once you have enough entries for it to be meaningful, Aloud can show an optional "mood and movement" insight that reads your step count and sleep from Apple Health, entirely on your device, to show how being active and rested line up with how you have felt. This access is read-only — Aloud never writes anything back to Health — and the readings are used only to calculate the on-screen insight. They are never stored by us, never linked to an account, and never leave your iPhone. Aloud requests Health access only when this feature is first shown, and you can grant or revoke it at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health, or in the Health app. If you never grant access, the rest of Aloud works exactly as before.
Purchases
Subscriptions and the lifetime purchase are processed by Apple through your Apple Account. We never see your payment details. Apple provides us only aggregated, anonymised sales reporting.
Notifications
Daily reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device. They are not sent from a server, and no push tokens or notification data are transmitted to us.
Deleting your data
- Delete individual entries inside the app at any time.
- Deleting the app removes all locally stored recordings and entries.
- If iCloud sync was enabled, you can remove synced data by deleting entries in-app before uninstalling, or by managing Aloud's data in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud.
Children
Aloud is not directed at children. Because the app collects no data from anyone, it collects no data from children.
Your rights (UK GDPR)
Because we do not collect or process your personal data, there is nothing we hold to access, correct, export, or erase — your journal exists only on your device and in your own iCloud account. If you believe we hold any personal data about you (for example, from a support email you sent us), contact us and we will resolve it. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Aloud ever changes what happens to your data, we will update this policy and the App Store privacy label before that version ships, and note the change prominently here.
